The following is a checklist of indicators for dyslexia. If these indicators apply to your child, you may want to get a formal diagnosis. A diagnosis is beneficial for accommodations that your child will need to succeed in school. After tutoring several dyslexic children I can tell you that the great unifying factor, or the tell-tale sign, that they all have in common, is difficulty spelling. Thank you to Headstrongnation.org for providing parts of this list. Thank you to Susan Barton for providing other parts and for all of her wonderful resources. Below is a PDF from her website Dys-add.com, I HIGHLY recommend heading over there for information about dyslexia, there are a ton of articles and videos!
Shows mixed handedness, or late establishing dominant hand
Inappropriately capitalizing words in the middle of a sentence, especially words that begin with B, D or P.
Has a close relative with dyslexia
Mispronounces unfamiliar words when reading them aloud
Spelling difficulties
Has trouble memorizing phone numbers, addresses etc.
Slow, choppy, inaccurate reading
Unable to master a foreign language
If you are waiting on a diagnosis please let your child's school know that dyslexia is suspected and that you will require accommodations. I can provide a list of beneficial accommodations based on my assessment of your child's learning style after just a short time of one on one tutoring.
